It's a common enough thing to do. You have a box come in, and a simple
test is to put a hard drive in from another working system instead of
its own. You want to buy new hardware, you decide to test it by putting
in a preset drive, rather than sit through an install. The list could
go on and on about all sorts of reasons about why you might transplant a
drive.
Most of my machines are servers with swappable drive carriers and they
are in several different locations. The easiest way to make changes is
to build a working copy in the lab, ship the disk, and have someone swap
it into the appropriate server.
