I don't like Kmail.
I don't like that every time I start kopete it starts Kmail

Is there a way to disentangle the two?

I don't experience this. How do you start Kopete?

Turns out to be a known "bug". I had given up searching with Google but searching the KDE forums I was lead down a long bread trail to Bug 97764 (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97764)

I went into kcontrol and turned off "contact" for imap and it appears to have remedied the problem.
