Of coarse this also rendered the system > unusable after the seg fault resulted in a reboot. /dev/mapper is used whenever you tell the system to use LVM. It you do NOT use LVM-based partitions, then /dev/sda and /dev/sdb will work. A segfault is most likely caused by flakey memory or specifying the "Use other repo" during the package selection phase of the install.
