But an entry in /etc/fstab has never been necessary in order to mount a file system. There is usually an entry created in /etc/mtab when a file system is mounted, and the process gnome-mount uses still creates this entry. But you can mount a file system without an /etc/mtab entry being created. (the -n option of mount) You may want to compare /etc/mtab with /proc/mounts sometime...
