You need to add something like the following to your /etc/modprobe.conf file. alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1 options snd-card-0 index=0 options snd-emu10k1 index=0 alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio options snd-usb-audio index=1 This is telling the kernel to place the sound cards in specific order. You will have to change the sound cards above to reflect yours.
