i thought of that, and had everyone disable their firewall (it was an
internal classroom LAN so no security implications.).  still, nothing.
it may be that, since it was the students who did the installation on
their own systems, they may have done something screwy, but it was
just weird that, out of 7 people, only 1 had a showmount that did the
right thing.

i'm sure it was a misconfiguration of some kind, i can't believe that
showmount itself would have a bug of that severity.  thanks.  the next
time the class rolls around, i'll test that more thoroughly.
