If you right click on the panel and choose :add to panel
Then choose: Custom Application Launcher
In configuring the GUI that opens you choose what you want to execute
and you can choose to represent it by an icon that you Browse for. There
are several dozen available.

To do two applications make a shell script that launches your two
applications and then launch that script from the panel.
