You could have done it in one operation.

yum localupdate sylpheed
or
rpm -U sylpheed-2.4.4-1.i386.rpm

Not critical here, but necessary when the package has other packages
that depend on it.

You may want to download the source RPM that sylpheed was build off
of, and look at the .spec file they used. There are probably some
patches as well. (The source rpm is in one of the *-source repo's,
but they are not enabled by default.)
