Those two are examples are the same. If the first didn't work, you
probably used single quote characters (') instead of backticks (`). The
backtick should be on the same key as the tilde (~).
personally I prefer the $( ) form, the backticks can produce semantically ambigous form: you cannot nest command substitution this way
