The information here is that your sound card is recognized by ALSA just
fine.

Assuming that apps like rhythmbox are then able to "play" something,
although you can't hear it, then what happens if you run

alsamixer

(part of the alsa-utils package if you don't have it already) and unmute
things, turn things up while audio "plays"?
