i tried using the clocksource=acpi_pm option, and while this will get
me into fedora, the rest of the instructions tell me to open a
terminal. type su, give command--gedit/boot/grub/menu.lst.- to edit
the grub conf. but the only response i get is that no such file or
directory is found? any more suggestion?

1 - make sure there's a space between gedit and the rest:
#gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

2 - maybe you don't have gedit installed? If you're using KDE, maybe:
#kate /boot/grub/menu.lst

Or if you don't have any luck there, press CTRL-ALT-F1, log in as
root, type 'startx -- :1', browse to /etc/grub.conf, open it with
whatever editor you prefer, make the changes, save, log out of X, type
'reboot'.

If all of that goes, you should be in business.
