If you use that maxcpu option does that mean that the installed OS will never

Shot in the dark. I assume you used the default file system for Fedora
7. Try using a windows like file system. when it asks if you want to go
into detail the first top panel saya delete all Linux and use LDV or
such file system. Say no and when you get to the point of using a
partition tell it the mount point is / and use ext3 and do format the
partition. Load it up and see if your laptop is happy.
