It depends on your locale settings how applications from Mozilla.org (Firefox, Thunderbird etc.) display the date. If you prefer ISO-8601 format, use the special locale named "en_DK". For example, UTF-8 users may set "LC_TIME=en_DK.utf8; export LC_TIME" before running Mozilla.org applications. If you only want to change date format in Thunderbird I'd recommend a shell alias or a small wrapper script. See also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Date_display_format for further details.
