The key difference is that Inkscape works with vector images, while Gimp
works with bitmaps. Vector illustrations are much better for the examples
you give (even if you convert to .png bitmap images in the end for use on
the web).

I find Inkscape really easy to use. Easier than Gimp. Go for it.
