You don't need one unless you're going to alter partitions.  You could
leave it uninstalled until such time as you do.  By then, whatever's
wrong with the updates would probably have been resolved.

I've never used it, I used fdisk when I set mine up.

That doesn't solve the problem, though.

Perhaps we're missing something when guessing what could be wrong. The
updates are fine. I see nothing wrong with their dependencies and
cannot reproduce the problem on FC5. The install of device-mapper also
fixed the previously missing entries in the rpm database. So, if a
manual update (with rpm -Uvh) of the two parted packages still fails,
something else might be corrupted.
