It would be interesting to see what "Connected display device(s)"
are shown in /var/log/Xorg.0.log when you boot with the monitor
connected. You should get the information for the ViewSonic monitor.
But it almost sounds like you are getting the information for the
laptop LCD instead. I am not sure, but you may need to load the ddc
module for this to work...
