That is not the right way to do it.

You'll have to look up their MX first:

$ nslookup
> set type=mx
> charter.net
...
charter.net     mail exchanger = 10 mail.charter.net.

Then you can try to telnet to port 25 to
mail.charter.net:

$ telnet mail.charter.net 25
Trying 209.225.8.224...
Connected to mail.charter.net (209.225.8.224).
Escape character is '^]'.
220 charter.net ESMTP server ready Tue, 13 Mar 2007 09:02:44 -0400
quit
221 charter.net ESMTP server closing connection
Connection closed by foreign host.

Note that the IP numbers differ.
