The hosts file doesn't set your machine's hostname, it's just a lookup
table of what names and IPs are associated with each other.  You set the
hostname elsewhere (see man hostname).

That's the idea - the hosts file has an IP associated with a FQDN, and
can have several aliases, as well (see man hosts).

Just type the "hostname" command by itself to see how it's set.
