Paul, I re-read your original message and found the lines:

which sounds like possibly a problem with the video driver for your
graphics card.  Do you still get this error with the new vo_driver?.
Just for giggles, if you read the mplayer docs, there is command-line
options for mplayer (non-gui) that allow for many esoteric and not very
useful video outputs such as ascii, I would try some of these. Also, I
had assumed, but does mplayer or gmplayer work on any video, or is it
just this one causing the grief?
