I have added vga=792 to the kernel line in grub.conf for several years.
  I've found that doing this with FC6 leads to a black screen, no little
penguins at the top or anything. I see the drive spin, and the system
boots up fine, but the console is blank.

I've experienced it with 3 different NVidia and 1 ATI cards.

Anyone know why?

Thomas;

I don't know why, but you could try these other values to see what
works (looks like vga=773 would give you the same resolution but fewer
colors):

+       | 640x480  800x600  1024x768 1280x1024
+---------+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+256  |   769          771           773          775
+32k  |   784          787           790          793
+64k  |   785          788           791          794
+16M |   786          789           792          795

I've actually tried all the way down to 769 with the same results. It's doing it on both FC6 and RHEL5. It worked fine on the same machines with FC5 and RHEL 4.

Very weird.
