Two things:

Maybe not 7 years ago, but in the 7.x versions of RHL lots of people critizied the fact the installing rpms normally gave errors on dependencies which had to then be fixed by looking for the missing package (if you happen to find out which one it is) and install it, hoping this one will not race for a new package it depends on.

Second, rpm -F didn't always work.
