Why not download the pre-build RPMs for webmin and usermin? PHPBB is
not going to require you to compile anything, or run make install -
it is all PHP scripts to be run by your WEB server. As for FTP, if
you are talking about an FTP server, you should look at the packages
available before deciding to build one from source.

As a general rule, it is a better idea to install the package from
an RPM then to install it from source on a system that uses Redhat
Package Management.

You also may want to learn a bit more about building programs from
source, and the dangers that go with it. If you can not untar,
configure, and build the package as a normal user, then you should
be careful about building it. You need to be root to install the
package if it uses system directories, but not to build it. If you
are going to build packages from source, you should also learn to
build your own RPMs.
