What's the adaptor? For what it's worth, I've had all sorts of troubles with PS/2 mice over the years doing wild behaviour (scooting about and clicking everywhere), but USB mice haven't done that. The worst they've done is a momentary scoot off in one direction, occasionally. I had one that was shockingly bad through a PS/2 extension cable, but mostly fine when plugged in directly. It made me wonder whether the power to the mouse was poor, so the chip inside it was acting randomly.
