You can change run levels, as you mentioned, or just CTRL ALT F1 to get
to a text console.  Once you've got a command line that you can see, you
can run:

  system-config-display --reconfig

And reset your display preferences, trying out different modes until you
get one that works.  Setting different monitors types may help, too, as
that can affect the scan rates X tries, even for the same resolutions
(like having 800 x 600 at 65, 75, or 85 Hertz, for example).
