And with this realization, I took a fresh look at the mount.cifs man
page. There it was: noperm; problem solved! Greatly simplified my fstab
entry, too -- I only needed username, password, and noperm for options.

Thanks to all who responded. Sometimes we just need to talk through a
problem and the solution becomes obvious.
