unfortunately I still observe random crashes. More than that, after I made the changes to my xorg, the backlight on laptop screen does not go off, although I have DPMS enabled. Mere that that, If I force the screen to turn off by doing

xset -display :0 dpms force off

it stays off for couple seconds and then goes back on. Any suggestions?

have to responding to my own post in order to bring my apologies. It appears that that the probelem with the screen backlite was not caused by the changes in xorg.conf but rather some unfortunate update which coincided with my changes. Little bit of reading
here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5665 ,
here: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=150028
and here http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2006/11/msg00415.html reveal that there is a bug in x-server and as a temporal solution is an
Option "NoPM" in ServerFlags section.
