What makes that even more amusing is that audio CDs cannot be mounted since
they have no actual filesystem and merely store raw PCM audio data (with a
leading Table of Contents, that identifies which block each track starts at
and ends with).

So, why XMMS needs a mount point to play the audio CD properly is utter
insanity...
