Or as a normal user -

startx

Then you don't have to switch run levels - which you probably don't want
to do on a server (except to switch to run level 1 for maintenance, but
that usually done rarely and only in emergency - and often done by
rebooting the machine into run level 1)

When you use startx - logging out of your desktop/window manager returns
you to the cli.
