Work offline mode means just that in Thunderbird. Thunderbird does not do per
schedule checks for email for any accounts in offline mode. Any emails written
while offline offer a 'Send Later' button, the "Send" button changes, which
puts outgoing emails in a folder named Unsent. Closing TB with unsent email(s)
will cause TB to prompt you about them and offers to send them before closing
or to decline for now and close without sending.

I much prefer Thunderbird 2.0 over Kmail. I have not used Kmail for many years.
