The former provide the desktop UI; the latter provide a graphical login manager. One can use a KDE desktop with the GDM display manager or vice-versa. The choice of display manager does not necessarily dictate one's window manager or desktop environment. More to the point, the original poster was asking how to switch from GDM to KDM.
