They are different packages:

$ yum list kernel\*
Available Packages
kernel.i686                              2.6.19-1.2895.fc6      updates
kernel.i586                              2.6.19-1.2895.fc6      updates
kernel-PAE-debug.i686                    2.6.19-1.2895.fc6      updates
kernel-PAE-debug-devel.i686              2.6.19-1.2895.fc6      updates
kernel-debug.i686                        2.6.19-1.2895.fc6      updates
kernel-debug-devel.i686                  2.6.19-1.2895.fc6      updates
kernel-devel.i686                        2.6.19-1.2895.fc6      updates

Just install the kernel package - this will be the default update.

Using default updates results in the kernel-debug default. Now I get a
PCI warning message at boot time and a message at the bottom of the
screen "Kernel alive" that I didn't see before.

Cheers
