It does sound somewhat like what Tom said, about not being able to load
the next stage of GRUB.  Have you checked that the drives are without
any errors?

I imagine that you'd get a different error response if that was the
cause.


I'm thinking yum/rpm messed up something while in /boot installing the kernel
