Possibly your RPM database is corrupt.  As root, after removing the lock
files, "rpm --verifydb", and then "rpm --rebuilddb" if there are problems
and the Packages file is OK.  Or just "rpm --rebuilddb" as --verifydb
doesn't catch everything, if you don't care to know about errors.

If your database was OK, file a bug on yum at bugzilla.redhat.org, giving
the backtrace so it can be fixed.
