It'd be a different matter if you had hot air out of the computer box blowing on it, but the modem ought to be built well enough that it cools adequately in free air. I doubt it's actually on your CPU, though. ;-) The Central Processing Unit is a chip (or more than one chip) on the motherboard. The entire computer box isn't a CPU.
