Right. inittab is rather cryptic. Just in case, what you want is this
line:

id:5:initdefault:

and change it to:

id:3:initdefault:

That will permanently change the boot to come up to the console; the
bit about appending "init 3" is a temporary fix. For now, you are
probably better off without X, which is a resource hog. Later, you can
change it back if you want.
