I used to like Pan, but they're buggering it around, over simplifying
it.  Previously, it used to have a useful, even if convoluted to use
(especially since you couldn't set defaults) filtering feature.

It used it to only show the last few days of messages in the list, so I
didn't have to weed through masses of chaff.  It's only a display
filter, though, so I could undo it and find older messages, when I
needed to.

That's gone now, so on some news groups you have to wade through
thousands of messages.
