Though I notice that VIM does seem to manage that well enough.  If you
open the same file on two different computers, you can edit on both of
them in turn.  You can't edit at the same time, though.  And I couldn't
see a way of that being practical, anyway.  Imagine the mess of two
authors trying to retype the same paragraph at the same time.
