My system had 256M of memory and I found I often maxed out on swap just running a browser & mail client and a couple of other progs (I had 512M swap, under the 2X ram theory) I recently added 1GB of ram, and now I rarely use any swap! I have seen in the monitor program a usage figure of .8%, but since my system is much more responsive, I don't run that program nearly as often. Disk memory, being cheap, you should use what you need, Unless you are editing Video or (possibly) HUGE Jpegs, Tiffs etc 512M should be more than plenty. You can always add more, or use a swap file that can grow with need.
