Try,

desktop>preferences>sound volume

First,
   file>change device
Select the alsa mixer device if you KNOW alsa already works.

Select edit>preferences

select the following with a checkmark:
* PCSpeakers
* PCM
* Headphone
* Master

make sure nothing in muted with a red X. try not to have the earphone sin your ears when trying this, hate for you to blow a gaket and loose control of your faculties.

$Alsamixer

this brings up a non-mouse gui... navigate with cursors

Find the following selections and try using the 'M' button. M=Mute/unmute. again be careful

heck try unmuting everything. if this works then read the ALSA docs on how to save these setting for the next time you boot. And get the fedora gui working.

You also might try the earphones with another sound source. Plugging in earphones (or external speakers) turns off the built-in speakers for my laptop and a couple of external speakers I'm familiar with. It's a feature. Could be that either the earphones are bad or they have a built-in volume control that happens to be set to off.
