How exactly do you "continue to open a gui interface"?
You may need to formally switch to runlevel 5 and log in in order to
get everything in place to manage the auto-mounting and permissions.

I tried both editing the fstab file which did not help then I tried
switching to run level 5 rather than startx from level 3. The telinit
command seemed to make the difference. My guess is some where it is a
bit of a sequence issue. Rather than an issue it is more an interesting
anomaly situation
