The usual advice seems to be to download livna's mplayer package, together with all the related codec packages. IIRC that is done by 'yum install mplayer*' when the livna repo is enabled. Don't know about that one, but if you are using KDE you might like to look in the Control Center for Sounds & Multimedia > Sound System and check that Auto-suspend if idle after: is set to 1 second. aRts has a nasty habit of holding on to sound systems unless you keep that value small.
