I ran into a similar problem last night with livna's RPMs. They're very badly broken (and apparently aren't getting tested before release). The actual issue for me was that there was an undefined symbol in livna's ffmpeg RPM which xine relies upon to perform the decoding. This resulted in xine either hanging, or being unable to play anything at all (and spewing a cryptic error).
