If it fails with a 'permission denied' you likely have a SE Linux problem. You can google for the part of the output just before the 'permission denied' or do a /usr/sbin/setenfoce 0 (as root) 2) where did you get mplayer? I got mine at livna.org and have had no problems with any format (I've used all the common ones. It does have a problem with websites that use the mms:/// designation, but otherwise it has worked extremely well and apparently does not require the added codecs pack though I haven't tried any of my old .anim or .director files from my Amiga days.
