ok, I try running amixer or alsamixer on the command line with no
arguments and I get the following errors:

# alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

# amixer info
Card default 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0x90320000 irq 90'
  Mixer name : 'SigmaTel STAC9227'
  Components : 'HDA:83847618'
  Controls : 21
amixer: Mixer load default error: Invalid argument
so it looks like something not working with the alsa drivers. So where
do I go from here?

I get similar errors when I run those commands as a regular user ...
try running them as root user.
