With mplayer - it appears you need to get into Mplayer> Preferences> Video and setup driver (maybe X11 xv?) vo=video output. Make sure you have the necessary codecs. Also =Mplayer> prefences> misc - indentify your dvd or cdplayer with /dev/xxx 2.
