So - what gives?   Mplayer is working.  But mozilla is not calling it?
Or something like that.  If it works at the command line than I am
missing something with mozilla????

Perhaps you have the totem-xine-mozplugin package installed which
may be trying to unsuccessfully play the video instead of allowing
the mplayerplug-in to work. Just a guess.
