I have the same problem : viewing these videos with mplayer-plugin in firefox leads to see connected or connecting to the server ... but no videos. If i right click to the mplayer-plugin window and copy the url i can go to a terminal and launch mplayer and copy the url and i can view the video without any problem so i think the problem is related to the mplayer-plugin.
I just remembered how I got around this same problem. If you uncomment and set noembed=1 in /etc/mplayerplug-in.conf CNN videos will play in a separate window. I prefer this way actually. I got the mplayerplug-in from the Livna repository. If you installed it from some other repo or from source, your mplayerplug-in.conf may be in a different location.
