Thanks Rahul. I submitted bug 218544 (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=218544). In the meantime, I went to http://atrpms.net/dist/fc6/alsa-driver and downloaded alsa-driver-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.x86_64.rpm and alsa-kmdl-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6-1.0.13-56.fc6.at.x86_64.rpm. I used rpm -Uhv to install them and then rebooted. Problems fixed. Based on my searching through google a lot of people seem to be having problems with the Intel ICH7 sound system - especially with respect to headphones.
