I've used digital in the past, but now I can't get anything at all in digital.  
When I select 'pay direct' I can hear it on the headphones, but not through 
the speakers.

That was on hdd, which doesn't have a cable.

It would never have occurred to me to try playing it from there, but David hit 
the button by mistake, and discovered that it would play.
