Assuming you are talking about gnome-terminal, run it with the
--show-menubar option and then you will have access to a menu where you
can change the colors. There is a pallet with about 16 colors that get
used for various things and you can change those to work better with a dark
background. There should also be a way to change bindings to the pallet (at
least for some things), but I haven't tried that.
